How Deep is the Mississippi?
The Mississippi River varies from very shallow to very deep. The deepest point is near Baton Rouge, Louisiana: 198 feet deep.
The Army Corps of Engineers maintains the depth of the navigation channel. Using specially designed dredge boats, they remove silt and mud from the river bottom. They shape a channel that is deep enough for commercial navigation. This channel is at least nine feet deep.
